Kumu Hula John Kaimikaua passed away recently. He is shown here as I photographed him last month at Ka Hula Piko, the festival he founded that celebrates Molokai as the birthplace of hula. Today, Hawaii Public Radio featured his chant and his mana'o (message, perspective) explaining why Molokai is a unique place.

This article from 1998 is a good start in understanding his mana: http://starbulletin.com/98/05/18/features/story1.html He was like the Brudda Iz of Hula, although that description falls short.
