A break from the snow plowing photos for the next few days for the Christmas season:
Every winter, I pot up a couple of amaryllis bulbs for Christmas. Every year, I have about 1/2 of them bloom, and almost never at the right time.
This year , I started with two bulbs- one cheap kit from a local home store, and one premium bulb from the garden center in College town.
The cheap bulb only lasted about a week- Rex (out Pit Bull mix- more of him on Christmas, BTW) decided it was something to dig up and tear apart. After a little frantic surfing on the web, I decided he wouldn't get sick from his effort, and I chalked it up as a loss.
the premium bulb was then moved to where Rex couldn't reach it, and given time to grow. the first bloom stalk came up between Thanksgiving and early December. For that reason, I figured Christmas blooming wasn't likely to happen.
And then this weekend, the second stalk rose up and opened its blooms. A few days early, but they will still be colorful (an unusual deep pink/red color, which I have never seen before, too) and striking a couple of days from now.
Which will be Christmas.
So for once (in a very long and rare time) I will have a blooming amaryllis for Christmas.... | |
