Codeman and I spent Saturday morning cutting firewood for next winter. One of the tress we dropped was a Wild (AKA Black) Cherry tree. It was about 25 feet tall, with a well developed trunk base (the reason why we dropped it, along with the fact that it splits easily and smells really nice while it burns).
Anyway...this piece of wood is the wedge that I cut out of the trunk. I probably could have cut this tree without taking out a wedge, but by doing so it was much easier to guess where the tree would fall (we were fighting high winds that day, so that was kinda important).
After we finished cutting the tree up, I picked up this wedge and noticed something a little odd- my saw had cut through something shiny. If you hit steel with a chainsaw, the blade bucks and kicks so hard you know you have done it. With whatever this thing was, my saw never skipped a beat.
