After showing the wedge to my coworkers, I decided to see if I could dig out the shiny object.
Since the wood around the metal was dead and decaying, it was easy to remove. The metal was lead, part of a shotgun slug that someone had (on purpose or accidentally) shot into the trunk of the tree many years ago. I counted 15 rings growth after the point where the tree deformed around the wound.
The lead was in two pieces. The two circular items in the photo are called "wads". The are located between the powder and the lead slug inside of a shotgun shell.
I don't know if someone was mad at this tree, or if they just had a stray shot hit the tree .
All I know is I have never come across something like this in all of my years of tree cutting.... | |
