A sunny day in May 1945.......I remember clearly......I was 15 and I stood amidst the crowd, shouting with joy when the Canadians drove on the road in and on their tanks, throwing sweets and sigarettes to the relieved people.
We were free! Liberated from the Nazi terror............
My special thoughts go out to those who were persecuted, tortured and burnt.....or died from hunger.......
Will mankind ever get wise? ....................

I realize that, Hans! I sometimes talk about it with Nico. he is 8 years younger than me, but he also remembers clearly because there was such tension in his family....his parents had a little jewish boy at home. They had made his hair blond with peroxide and told everybody he was a little nephew.
Nico's father was a building contractor and he had his workshop next to the house. The Germans had confiscated his workshop because he refused to work for them.
Imagine.....the occupators nextdoor and that little jewish boy playing around!
All servived and we still have contact with the man who was then that little boy:)))
He went back to his own parents and had a difficult time, because he considered Nico's family as his family. Fortunately all his family came back safely.....

touching tribute and words Riet, these things have to be remembered, it miight not change things in the future, but to teach the younger generation of the horrors of War i think is essential as i guess in the end no one really wins, just more people die.
I would talk for hours with my mother about her memories of the war... very hard times but she said that it made the people of London even stronger than before.
I pray for total freedom..but even as i write this our soldiers are away fighting in another country .... i also pray they never have to protect our country again, but many of those away will not survive to do so whether by age or there current position.

yes....the British have also suffered a lot in both wars...1 and 2.
What makes me so angry is that we are so manipulated........that our men and women are sent to faraway countries in which our governments have interests.....oil for example........

Thanks, tacka:) Isn't it incredible that one lunatic like at that time Adolf Hitler can get the power to destroy the lives of millions of people?
And it happens again and again........

I agree totally ..... its a disgrace, i would fight for my country in a second without giving it a thought, but only if someone was attacking me *in my country*

May 05 2008 19:20 GMT hallo
I'm reading your stories in one eye and watching the disasters and devastation of Myanmar shown on TV in the other eye!
I hope mankind will stop killing each other and utilize the wasted resources to protect our planet and help one another in such difficult moments!
