This is "Emily" our female Great Pyrenees Mountain dog.

She was 9 1/2 years old but we only had her for the past 2 years as she was a rescue dog. In that 2 years she stole everyone's heart & became part of our family.

We had to take Emily to the vets yesterday and have her euthanized since she was suffering & in pain.

Below is one version of a poem called "The Rainbow Bridge"

I'm going for surgery tomorrow & will be in for 5 days, so I won't be able to respond for the next week.

EMILY

May 2001 - August 30, 2010

There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth called the Rainbow Bridge due to it's many colours.

When a beloved pet dies, it goes to this special place . There are meadows and hills for all of the pets so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are now healthy and young, the hurt or maimed are whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one thing; they miss that special person who loved them on Earth.

The day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. Her bright eyes are intent, her eager body quivers, her ears are up. Suddenly she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, her legs carrying her faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your beloved pet finally meet, you take her into your arms and embrace together in joyous reunion. The happy kisses rain upon your face, your hands again caress the head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, who has been gone from your life, but was never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated....

What was wrong with her?

She was 9 1/2 years old which is an average life span for most large breeds. In Emily's case, because of previous attacks on her & neglect, she was probably much older health wise.

She was in pain, having difficulty getting up & down & losing control of bodily functions. Until last month, she still had more good days than bad, but once she started suffering, we had to make this tough decision.

Thanks for the comment martini957.
