Ihiihi Fern

This is the Ihiihi Fern. It looks a lot like a four-leafed clover but it really is a fern. It is terribly rare because of its general habitat loss. Invasive grasses almost always dominate and out compete this little fern. Highly endangered, there are only small populations of this fern on Oahu, Moloka`i, and Niihau.

(Better close-up pictures not taken by me here)

This past Saturday (March 8, 2008), the Oahu Invasive Species Committee, a bunch of volunteers, and a group of boy scouts joined up to clear the habitat for this fern and build a fire break. The hot Hawaiian sun beat down heavily but we were able to accomplish a lot of work. Hopefully we did more good than bad. I know I accidentally pulled a fern or two up while trying to weed out the invasives.

I am somewhat disappointed at myself that I didn't get a good close-up picture of them when I had the chance. I guess I'll just have to hike up there again some time in the future.

There are more pictures of the service-trip/hike here:

There are some good landscape pictures of Hanauma Bay, Koko head, and Hawaii Kai in there so I'll eventually post them up here... but if you want to see the photos now, give it a look.

I agree with Ashdad, beautiful in orginal.
I always learn some new thing from you Pueo....
btw, I saw this looks similar to our plant called "Pak Wane". It's called Cover fern or Water Cover in Engliah. Is it the sme, Pueo?
Here we have lots of them. In rainy season you can find them even on side road and many people in the north-eastern part of the country eat them fresh with their hot and spicy dishes.

Hmm I'd have to do more research on your "Pak Wane" Poulet. They may be related. The ihiihi fern looks very similar to clover:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clover

But it doesn't have flowers and is actually a fern. But it could be related. It is very possible.

Thank you Pueo. :))
I try to find the article of our "Pak Wane" in English but didn't find yet. This is what I found with photos http://www.fernsiam.com/FernWorld/Taxonomy/Marsileaceae/
The one I'd told you is Clover Fern ( Marsilea crenata Presl ). Here, Pak Wane is a kind of weed but it is also a vegetable.

Hey! They are related! They both come from the same plant family "Marsilaceae" .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsileaceae

The `ihi`ihi fern is Marsilea villosa
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marsilea_villosa

Whereas your Clover Fern is Marsilea crenata

btw- I was able to get some Thai translation of the page you gave me from http://www.thai2english.com

http://www.thai2english.com/trans.html?query_id=80965

Apparently your "Pak Wane" roughly translates to "vegetable slice" or "vegetable glasses". Interesting.
