Jceca, they are shrines. LOTS of Thai people have them at home. It's a Buddhist-Brahman belief that every house has a royal site and they place a shrine as a house of the spirit (which is a deva or angle).
I, myself has no shrine at home 'coz I believe in a pure Buddhist. :)))
