FotothingFriday - lets celebrate this wonderful thing that brought us together

This past year we have experienced triumph and tragedy, met new friends and lost others, have seen the tremendous power of nature strike around the world.

Yet through it all, we have always had a home here at Fotothing, where we can post a bit of our world in a photo to tell a story, and come back time after time to see other's stories and to connect with both old and new friends.

Thank you Dom, and the original members for breathing life into this wonderful universe that has become Fotothing.

Thank you to all my friends, to all that have encouraged and guided me. To those that have been "there" when I needed them - a thousand thank you's.

To those I haven't yet met - I look forward to spending time in your world.

Wonderful Bill, yes its about "showing the world through your eyes" - reality.
I've met and made wonderful friends for real and for life, and love, around the world, through my past almost 3 years here..I also learned a lot about photographing, that still is the main thing around here and that somehow brings us together, our interest and passion for see and share the world through that lens.

A great and well though out contribution to this week's special theme Bill.
Fotothing was instrumental for us getting to know each other.
Thank you for the friendship that resulted from that, it has enriched my life.
I treasure our phone conversations, and feel privileged to be part of your life.
Have a wonderful weekend my dear friend!!!

Great entry, Bill!!

Quick question. How fast will a 1 gig CF card fill up with RAW files from a Nikon D70? About how many pictures will I be able to get on there (in best quality of course).

wonderful realization - would like to escort Suzannesmash's words as example.....saludos

A one GB card will take about about 175 photos, give or take 50 - depends on how much info is in the pic, it affects the file size.

Bill, this is fabulous! I can't put into words what you all mean to me. You did a good job of that in your words. Thanks so much for being there for me.

Well said Bill !!
Great entry.

virginiabrill: Several settings can influence this. On my D200 I use the compressed RAW format which reduces the storage of a single RAW file from 16Mb to 10Mb (on average). I don't store any JPG, so all I have is the RAW file, this also saves storage.

Thank you very much Seraphael!

Virginia - what this says applies to the D200 - but the D70 which is essentially like my D70s - shooting Raw files what I said b4 applies

.JPG files almost without exception will be smaller (straight from the D70)
Shooting as .JPG - The D70's processor figures the photos look. It actually does a pretty good job, each shot is compared to a database of >10,000 photos and their characteristics AS IT is ShoT!!!!!

You can also shoot JPG pics @ 3 fps for more images than you can with raw because of the smaller file size (the bottleneck in ANY camera as far as the camera's ability to maintain it top fps is directly related to it's buffer (built-in ram)) - the camera and processor shoot so much faster than the camera can save to the memory card that eventually on mid-range camera's like this you can only get to about 15-20 images @ 3 fps (in raw) before filling the buffer up and the fps then rely on how fast the camera can transfer the images to the CF memory card. As images leave the buffer then subsequently shoot images can be sent to the buffer - then eventually to the CF card.

All that being said - I have shot in only raw format for 2.5 years. I want to decide how the image is processed.

Too much info or helpful??

Lovely sentiments, Bill. Steve and I were here from the very start, a couple of months after we got together, and we have made many friends through Fotothing. I use it as a diary (with the odd attempt at being arty as well) and it's almost like a home provided for me to look back over the time since Steve and I met.
