Creve Coeur Lake - 4 miles from our house....

Hey - we had an earthquake Friday morning -
5.2 Richter, followed 6 hours later by an aftershock of 4.5. The epicenter was about 150 miles due east of us in St Louis. The quake was felt as far north as Wisconsin and Michigan and as far south as Atlanta, Georgia.
I slept thru the 1st one but I was awake for the wall shaking aftershock.
and right here in the middle of the USA!!

Great capture of such wonderful sundown scene !!!
Good the wall shaking of the aftershock was very
minor .. Hope no damage, however small, was
caused. .. Have a very happy, peaceful Sunday.

Bliss :-) superb colour and feeling. To be honest I think this is one where you can ignore the rule, and maybe even centre it exactly?

Thank you very much Geoff.

I shot it with the horizon in the center (here obviously) and 1/3rds at both the top and bottom. I like all the shots, and will probably post some of the others but the centered ones are the only ones that showoff the sky and the water colors well equally well.

I figure that I only get so many times that both my availability and the relative beauty of the sunsets are limited so I tend to shoot pics for 1.5 hours, 30 mi before, during and after sunset.... and end up with about 75-100 or so shots.

A few days ago I saw a show at TV about earthquakes in the midwest USA. It was about 1812 and it had some kind of sand volcanos. Many places were flooded by the Missouri river. The most interesting issue to me, as a structural Engineer., is the fact that there is not a big fault, as San Andres in California, in the area.
When I was coming out of the Engineering School we had a big earthquake in Caracas, about 150 people were killed. Many of the very best professors from MIT and California Tech came to Venezuela to show us the new trends on seismic structural design.

yesss, the only way to get the sun AND sky reflected in the lake ( calm ) water is to shot it with the horizon in the center ...

beautiful ....

and glad to hear you're safe ...

absolutely
the 1811-12 quakes were on the New Madrid Fault line (http://www.scchealth.org/docs/ems/docs/prepare/newMadrid.html) .... the quakes (worst of the ones) were bigger than the 1906 San Francisco quake... a piece of trivia - this quake came on the same month and day - at about the same time as the 1906 quake
it must have been really wonderful having all those "experts" there to give you guys the latest and greatest info

Superb shot, Bill!!

An earthquake!!?? Glad to know it didn't harm you, Bill.
Here in Bangkok, we had HUGE hailstone in 3 districts on Thursday afternoon. The 2 disctricts are close to my home but I found only heavy rain..
This is weird, Bill, Hailstone in summer...and in Bangkok!!! :((

I'm certainly glad you guys weren't affected by the hail. We get hail occasionally year round - but have never gotten any damage.
The earthquake came just weeks after severe flooding in an outer part of town - again we weren't affected.
