all along the Mississippi River there are places that the population isn't large enough to support a bridge so there are ferries like these
I didn't have time to ride this one but when I was in college I used to go to Galveston every Friday and ride the ferry from there to Bolivar Point and back - it was great fun the ride lasted about 10-15 minutes so we got out of our cars and had mostly free rein on the ferry:

Just north of Alton Illinois are a series of limestone cliffs and bluff that extend for 40-50 miles north along the riverside. They average about 100-150' in height.
