Roger - The purpose of HDR is to allow one to have a photo with a (H)igher (D)ynamic (R)ange - in other words, exposing light in the shadows without "blowing out" the lighter areas in the pic so that all the areas can be more evenly and properly exposed.

It's certainly not necessary or even needed in the great majority of photos - and eventually camera sensors will be sensitive enough to do it themselves. Performing HDR allows the photo to look more like what we can actually see with our eyes - current camera sensors just aren't capable of seeing that in a single image.
