Our community fire department held an open house last month.

Our firefighters and paramedics are required to have a college degree before they can go through the extensive training and certification. All are cross-trained on all facets and because of the river along the city border they are also trained on winter and water rescue.

Great series - & total respect to your guys. The US system makes much more sense than here in the UK. We have seperate fire & ambulance crews, with the fire crews only holding basic first aid certification (usually). The only advantage on the ambulance side is speed as we have a lot of rapid responce units, with a paramedic that can get to a scene first and start emergency aid before the ambulance etc arrives...

Doody we are so fortunate here in Maryland Heights, not only is our fire dept nationally recognized but response time averages less than 3 minutes!
