Our community fire department held an open house last month.
Our firefighters and paramedics are required to have a college degree before they can go through the extensive training and certification. All are cross-trained on all facets and because of the river along the city border they are also trained on winter and water rescue.
Great series - & total respect to your guys. The US system makes much more sense than here in the UK. We have seperate fire & ambulance crews, with the fire crews only holding basic first aid certification (usually). The only advantage on the ambulance side is speed as we have a lot of rapid responce units, with a paramedic that can get to a scene first and start emergency aid before the ambulance etc arrives...
