In WW2 the American ship yards built 2700 of these boats in less than two weeks per ship to replace the vessels being destroyed by German U-boats in the North Atlantic. Almost all of the Liberty Ships were crewed by merchant seaman, who sailed the North Atlantic to bring supply's, troups etc. to the allied war effort and contributed so much, with huge sacrifice's to ensure that Europe would be free.
This ship in San Fransisco is now the only fully ocean ready Liberty Ship left today. When I was a young boy of 10, our next door neighbour, Mr. Spencer was a retired seaman who sailed on Liberty Ships. He was torpedoed 3 times, lost many comrades, but never hestitated to go back to sea and continue to work and contribute to the the allied success that allowed us to be free to-day. I used to love to listen to his story's, but it is only now, after having lived 56 years that I can appreciate so much what he, and countless thousands of other's sacrificed for us. | |
