Inside the Netherton Canal Tunnel; 2768 metres long. This tunnel was built between 1855 and 1858; it was the last tunnel of the canal age to be built in this country.
It's wider than most similar tunnels and there is a towpath on each side, although one of them is no longer used. The path is about four feet wide and there is a handrail all along the length.
Along with a group of friends, I walked through this tunnel today; it's very dark and damp, and I was very glad I wasn't alone! | |
