We went to an "Apple Day" in Shropshire, where a family of mum, dad and two sons are developing the 18 acre site where they live (in a caravan) into a permaculture centre. Since being there they've planted hundreds of trees, including ninety (yes, 90!) varieties of apples.
This year the long winter delayed the growth of the apple blossom and consequently the apples. Only about half of the apples were ready for sharing with us - most of the varieties are here! Some are very old varieties, first discovered in the 18th or 19th century.
