I thought that the African elephant is less tolerant than the Indian elephant and is not used for giving people a ride?

Yes senna3 you are correct on that point.
However these are rescued elephants, and have been with humans a great deal. They have been there for quite a while now and so are quite happy to interact with people. It is each other that sometimes causes problems.
One of them a female gets very anti a younger male and she tends to strut about when he invades her space so to speak. This can be fun and games - I know as it happened to me and I nearly fell off...........
