Abandoned copper mine .. Apparently the tunnels went 2/3's of the way out under the sea to Beehive Island

Copper was discovered by accident. The original mining operations were to extract manganese. Copper was mined from 1844 until June 1852 when the mines were flooded.

I never knew copper was ever mined in Nz, my parents met in the copper belt in Zambia donkeys years ago.
