My new kiwi friends passing guards at the Government buildings ... Chile seems a very over policed country .. even the parks seem to have hundreds of guards just standing around. The upside to this is that crime is not tolerated and they have a heavy fining system which seems to deter crime. Chile is apparently one of the safest countries in South America
in 93 we were in Zürich - the airport terminal was over the train station and at the top of the escalator was a soldier - with a rifle that was about 5' long - I was actually a little afraid initially - then our friend told us how safe it was there
