Auckland War Memorial Museum was built as a memorial to the 12,000 people from the Auckland province who died in the first and second world wars.

NZ's contribution to WWI in particular showcased attitudes and attributes - bravery, tenacity, practicality, ingenuity, loyalty to King and comrades - that helped a young New Zealand define itself as a nation, even as it fought unquestioningly on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire.

The top floor of the Museum is dedicated to the memory of fallen soldiers and is known as the World War I Sanctuary.
Almost a third of those killed have no known grave. Here the Auckland Roll of Honour is inscribed on the walls of the Museum, a memorial to commemorate the fallen.

The spectacular stained glass lead light ceiling directly above the entrance foyer shows the Coat of Arms of all British Dominions and Colonies during World War I.

Thanks Crowy, you can't help but be moved at these memorials, so many young lives ended before the promise is fulfilled.

What a beautiful monument to those New Zealanders who fought and died in the wars.
WW1 and Galipoli was dreadful for the ANZACS. We all remember them!

Thank you William, and I think we do remember well and better these days. The tags anzac anzacday and gallipoli just on this site show that. I found we have the grand daughter of a Victoria Cross medal holder.
Looking forward to visiting Galllipoli next year.
