Almost at the summit .. to one side is a monument established by the NZ Surveyors Institute to those that mapped and opened up NZ from the 1800's onwards, I have read a few books about the pioneer surveyors amazing stories on negotiating and living with the maori and mapping land which was mainly virgin forest
