The impressive pink granite Obelisk was carved in Egypt around 1450 BC. The Byzantine emperor Theodosius had brought it from the Temple of Karnak to Constantinople in 390 AD and had erected it on a marble pedestal ,in the Hippodrome Area of Constantinople . Relief on the pedestal depicts emperor while watching races.
The hieroglyphs on the obelisk on the other hand describe the sacrifices presented to God by Egyptian Pharaoh Tuthmosis.
Amazingly only one third of the original monument made it to this spot, (It was 60 m. (200 feet) high and weighed 800 tons)- the rest being lost in transport from its first home in Egypt, or shattered while being hauled to be placed on the pedestal as it is seen on today. . | |
