It is native to North East Asia and was cultivated from the original Chinese yàng tào .
It was misnamed Chinese Gooseberry but was changed in the 1950's.
New Zealand is now growing a Gold Kiwifruit with yellow flesh , a sweeter less acidic flavour and a smooth skin . I prefer them myself.
The vine is trained over a wire frame and when mature forms this lovely shady canopy.
