On August 5/6th this year Mt Tongariro erupted for the first time in over one hundred years. The eruption of ash and boulders badly damaged a tramper's hut in the park but there were no casualties.
You can see the new steam vents between the trees and to the right.
This was taken looking across Lake Rotoaira on the northern edge of the Tongariro National Park, NZ.
