Early this morning the beautiful South Island city of Christchurch NZ was struck by a 7.4 magnitude earthquake . There has been no loss of life but the damage is very widespread including smaller towns of the Canterbury Plains.
This photo was taken last year and the city , mountains of the Southern Alps and plains, lie beneath this beautiful sunset... it is hard to believe at the moment that the sun will rise again tomorrow .
We live on the North Island of NZ and gratefully are not effected .
I heard on the 7 o'clock news about the earthquake, and thought of you...glad you have not been affected...sorry about those who have though, and the damage that has been caused.
The big earthquake that I was in lasted only 15 seconds, but it took years for us to rebuild afterwards. The library where I used to work was closed for five years, so I feel for those folks.
When my brother was in the U.S. Air Force, he used to visit New Zealand quite a bit. He loved Christchurch and took dozens of photos there. Again, I'm wishing for better days ahead for them .......
Margaret, I was thinking of you today & so happy to hear that you are safe - we, too, are in an earthquake zone - our local village was devastated by an earthquake on Christmas day 1884 in which 58 people lost their lives!
Thank you Barbara ... it happens around the world and for various reasons Christchurch has been lucky. Perhaps due to the time of day 4.35 am and very strict earthquake risk building codes.
Thank you Jo for your kind words . Sadly many old heritage buildings have been destroyed or beyond repair but a small price to pay for no loss of life.
It is said that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger....I sure hope this is true and the folks that lost so much that was a part of their life are blessed with the strength to endure their loss and become even stronger than they ever thought possible. God bless them!
