Come on a journey across the Napier - Taihape Road. North Island. NZ.
This is the inland secondary route that connects to the central North Island and the Tongariro National Park from Hawkes Bay.
Originally an ancient Maori trail to the interior from Hawkes Bay , followed by pack horses bringing out wool from the very large sheep stations and tourists who were attracted to the hot springs and mountain air.
It is now under going a major upgrade to eventually become a national highway. The road is often closed in winter and care should be taken at all times.
The distance is 134 km and the road is approx 700 metres above sea level.
There are no petrol stations or cell phone coverage .
Enjoy ... it is a great journey .
