Good capture Marg. They used to be on the gun licence in NZ years ago; I don't think they are now; but they didn't make for very good eating anyway; they are tough old birds; I think it was just a way of keeping their numbers down. :-)
As I have said before, very similar to the Swamp Hen here in Australia; as you say, same family.

Lovely! I've seen them in the hundreds where I last lived in Australia. They felt perfectly safe building their nests in the middle of a small man-made lake in an urban area.
