In the Xhosa tradition - they have just become Men - after a circumcision ceremony - They spend a period on their own with their bodies covered in the white paste and blankets - after which everytning they owned as children is burnt and they receive new clothes and are accepted as adults into the community - This places them up the heirarchy and so they are best pleased and smiling!!!
