Taiaroa Heads on the Otago Peninsula is occupied by an Albatross colony, (the only colony on the mainland in the world), it used to be the site of the Pukekura Pa, (fortified village of the Maori people). This barren face of land is where the adult Albatross return, after spending, in most cases, many, many months at sea, having themselves been born in this colony; return to bred the next generation of Albatross.
The larger vessel at the base of the cliff is the ‘Monarch’, commercially used to ferry people around the Otago Harbour, visiting places of historical interest.
