so how does it work

Ziet er goed uit.

see the previous picture. If the shape is scissors and not a plant and you melt glass sheet in the form, you'll get a sheet of glass with the form (in this case scissors) as if a footprint. because of the transparancy of glass, this is the effect - kind of - the background is a piece of plywood here.
