The new River Suir bridge
The N25 Waterford Bypass in Ireland was opened yesterday, including its focal cable-stayed bridge over the River Suir.

The 475m-long bridge has a 230m-long river span and its composite deck is supported from a single 112m-high concrete A-frame pylon in a twin-fan arrangement.

It was built under a public-private partnership through Celtics Road Group, which is made up of Royal Bam Group, Bam PPP, Dragados Concesiones de Infraestructuras and National Toll Roads. The contractor was Waterford Joint Venture, comprising Bam Civil and Dragados. The consulting engineer was Mott MacDonald Ireland and the contractor's detailed design was by Arup, Carlos Fernadez Casado, WYG, Eptisa and Indra.

I saw a programme recently about the Forth Road bridge - they were listening with a stethoscope to the wires within the cables breaking. They reckon in about 20years it will no longer have the strength to take the weight of the traffic and other suspension bridges like the two Severn bridges will be in the same position. Scary!

Yes Sheila, the cable stays on this bridge are expected to last for 100 years, and then they must be replaced. The old stone bridges hand built have been there for centuries.
