Peter....thank you so very much my dear friend....this was a very radical design in 1931 when it was designed. I believe this house appeared on the cover of "Time" Magazine in that period and helped launch a renewed career for Frank Lloyd Wright.
NightOwl...thank you so very much my friend....this architecture was very modern for the period....after walking through the estate, I'm not too sure this would be the house for me.....
Hans..thank you so very much my friend...this is one of the more famous residences in America....it was certainly very modern for the 1930's, when it was built.....by a famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. He not only designed the house but over 100 pieces of furniture that went into the home.
I love this building. I always call it "Falling House". I saw a documentary where they explained that it was falling apart. They did not use great quality materials at the time to make the house stand the test of time. I hope to visit it one day in person. Before the river sweeps it away.
Heather...thank you so very much....it's a very famous house....certainly on the edge of modern architecture when it was built in the early 1930's...after walking through the house, I'm not sure it would be my cup of tea.......
Martini...thank you so very much my dear friend.....this is one of the few locations where they permit you to take photographs....I was rather disappointed I couldn't take photographs inside the home......
Roger...thank you so very much....this was very modern for 1930's...I believe the house was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1931 and built from 1931-1932. I remains virtually unchanged from then............
now I kow some one that's actually been there to take a pic - you did a fabulous job Jake!!!
Polo - about $1mm USD are spent annually to keep the house in original shape and to preserve it's integrity. One of Wright's architectural principles was to try and leave a "zero footprint" - which simply means leaving the natural area in un-touched condition in conjunction with the building.
That's part of the reason the waterfalls actually run through a part of the house.
McDonegal...thank you so very much my dear friend....it was extremely modern when built in 1931-1932. It had big terraces but the sleeping quarters were quite small.....
PhotoPro....the tour guide told us that the original budget for the house was $30,000 USD but the actual completion cost was $150,000 USD in 1931 money....translated into todays dollars, it would cost approximately $5 Million dollars......kinda pricey for my tastes.....and budget !!!!!
Otilia..thank you so very much my dear friend.....it was a very nice trip to the mountains of western Pennsylvania.....to see this unique and famous architecture.....
Jamby....the terraces on this house were huge...I think the people who originally had the house built (Kaufman's out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) like the outdoors....the inside of the house was rather small with the exception of the Great Room.
Heather...thank you so very much.....I agree with you....this isn't my cup of tea....I quite like a more conventional house.....the house we have now is the first new house I've ever had.....all my previous homes were historical.....with their own set of problems....
Martini..thank you my dear friend....this house was suppose to be naturally cooled by the water and breezes.....unfortunately, the guides had all the windows closed and it was sweltering.....I came out completely wet from the heat in the house.........
Abojovna...thank you so very much my dear friend.....the location of this house was in a beautiful spot....the roar of the water was quite loud and the water temperatures were around 55-60 degrees-F....too cold for this fellow...........
Skbeta....thank you so very much....it's very nice to meet you......I once visited this house many years ago.....virtually nothing has changed...hard to believe this was built in 1931.
Pat...thank you so very much.....unfortunately, they wouldn't allow photographs within the building but we were able to hike along the stream and find this vantage point....
Eleni...thank you so very much my dear friend...it's amazing that Frank Lloyd Wright designed this house in 1931 and it was completed in 1932....very modern for that period.....
Glenn..thank you so very much...I was astounded to realize that Frank Lloyd Wright designed this house in 1931.....must have been something back then.......as it is today.
