I often must travel the same roads. It gets boring. Not enjoying boredom, I have a couple of tricks.
One is that I always refer to a state map. If the return trip is not on a strict schedule, I get off the interstate highway and take state roads, or any back road that takes me in the same general direction, even if I have to zig-zag. I have found it almost universally true that while the highway system allows for faster travel, many of the two-lane roads allow a more direct route, and I therefore almost always spend nearly the same amount of time traveling. And when there is a significant difference ~ or if I'm stopping to take a lot of fotos! ~ I just skip my lunch break. This is infinitely more fun.
The other trick, and this I find fascinating, is to see things with what I call "new eyes." I pretend that I am seeing any particular place for the very first time, and that every little detail is interesting. For truly, if I found the place fascinating the first time, it still is. All I need to do is to stop taking for granted what I think I know, and to look again. If you try this, and really study the landscape, the cities and farms, the people and their habitats, forests and waterways, you will see that there is something to study in every square foot of any place we go. And really, isn't that we are hoping to express with our fotos? Sometimes I just need to show it to myself again before I show you.

CHEERS, BUDDIES! =)

Very nice landscape and composition !
Your words are true.....I also think that sometimes the camera is disturbing the comprehension of vision, and therefore sometimes it is best to let the camera be in the bag and just capture the image with the eyes and hide the image in the mind, unaltered.....
(Maybe the next time similar places or images appear we know what to do with a camera to be able to shear just a bit more of the atmosphere or mood with our friends...)

I agree with you, Svein. One thing that I have always been bothered by with my fotography is that I cannot convey the way the air smelled, or the temperature, or the music that I might be reminded of, or any of a hundred other things that cannot be shared with a foto. I tend to prefer natural light and minimal processing, so my fotos tend to be almost exactly what I saw. Again, seeing a scene is only one part of being there. Sometimes I also write about my experiences, and perhaps that is the closest I will be able to come to sharing a full experience. Thanks!

right on! i like the way you think!
Jeff lives by his Thomas Guide.... he knows so many back ways to go places! its always funner that way! And i find that i discover more things when i am "searching" the landscape for a picture... even if i do not take a picture for awhile i do find things that might go un noticed otherwise

Great Shot JP. Yours and Sveins comments really struck a chord there. I often take random roads on my way home from work just to "see whats there" and "where it goes". I am glad you informed me that I am not the only one. I get strange looks from people sometimes when I mention that. They cannot comprehend why I would not take the shortest fastest route home. Also, sometimes when I go to a place of beauty and I am snapping away like mad, I notice when I put the camera down that I wasn't really interacting with the place but was more distanced. Somtimes this is a good way of really "thinking" about a shot and looking hard for interesting details. But as you both said, sometimes it IS just better to be there soaking it all up.

Cheers Bud!
