A lightning aircraft today at Bruntingthorpe airfield. It has been worked on for over three years by some true enthusiasts, and today was the first time that it had been tested along the runway.
The ground shook and we needed ear plugs.!

Remember the awesome sight (and yes, sound) of this aircraft. Not very nimble though, I rmember seeing one do a "360" at Greenham Common; unlike the F-14,15 and 16s there it actually went out of site some miles distant. The Yanks stayed easily within the airfield perimeter!

What a great picture of the Lightning. We visited Bruntingthorpe some years ago to see the work being carried out on the Vulcan bomber before it took to the skies !

Now that must have been a great sight!
I was surprised to hear that Bruntingthorpe has a longer runway than Gatwick and so they are able to cater for such large aircraft.

Sadly, I can remember the days when this was all that stood between us and the Soviet masses!
When I was in the CCF at school we went to Leuchars where these were based - we watched 2 come in to land and one of them had a parachute failure and had to abort and come round again - lots of fire engines and smoke!
