Fotothing is growing quickly now, with over 50 members and 200 photos!

The core functionality of the site is almost complete, but I'd really like to know what features YOU would like to see. So leave a comment here, or use the 'Contact Us' form..

Some of the features that are already in development are:

* Internal messaging system ('email' other users)
* RSS / Atom feeds
* Display your latest photo on your own web site
* Email notification of comments, messages and uploads from friends
* Improved image quality

So what do you want? Let me know!

5 Teeny weeny (say 50 x 30?) thumbs of friends fotothings layed out vertically below the navigation links on the left hand side of the page.. Not to be too specific or anything! :)

Keep the full-resolution upload stored behind the scenes. Then you can implement two totally keen features:

1) Click to zoom in. I have this on my personal photography pages and it's a lot of fun.

2) Partner with someone like Shutterfly to allow people to buy prints. This would be an optional setting by the photographer - whether to allow it at all, and how much to charge above cost.

And another feature that would totally rock but would take more work: TiVo-style thumbs up / thumbs down buttons feeding into a collaborative filtering system for finding new photographers and pictures you will like.

I think something like this is the only long term solution to the Brazilian problem that fotolog and orkut have run into. Collaborative filtering isn't a single global best/worst rating system, it's a separate personalized metric for each viewer. The Brazilians, and people who are into puffy-lipped camgirls, will settle into a mutual adoration cloud, while those with other interests will find each other and form their own affinity areas.

Back when I was running the unofficial reverse friends database for fotolog I did a test implementation of this idea, and it worked great. Didn't even take very much CPU power.

And: are you going to do anything equivalent to fotolog's group logs?

All three of these URLs go to my page:

http://www.fotothing.com/fotothing.php?id=jef

http://www.fotothing.com/jef

http://www.fotothing.com/jef/

They all work with the &imgid= stuff too. You ought to pick one form and use it consistently.

Oh, and shouldn't URLs posted here in the comment area be active? Don't allow full HTML, that's a huge exploit hole, just scan for strings that look like a URL and wrap them in your own HTML.

jef knows what he's talking about. He's watched and suggested and been hero and also ignored by fotolog. Personally, i think he has a keen eye for the social/technologicality of what's going on and besides all of my silly suggestions have been suggested (as of the moment).
