My late upload for gatefriday: a lych-gate.
Often seen in England (and maybe other parts of Britain too?), this is a roofed gateway to a churchyard, formerly used at burials to shelter the coffin until the clergyman's arrival.
A very beautiful example of the Lych gate, when I saw the theme for this week's funfriday I expected to see a good few of these, but this is only no.2. Great entry
They are not very common, but you can find them here, mostly associated with Protestant church's. I can't recall ever seeing one here in Kerry, but up in the midlands, (around Kildare & Laoise) I have seen a few. As a boy growing up I lived in Northampton & I used to be fascinated by some of the old C of E church's in the village's of the County, esp. in the Haughton's, a group of villages in Northamptonshire.
This is a wonderful example of Lych gates Sylvia, I expected to see more this week, I have a few from the lake district and Derbyshire, and a super one from near Rudyard in Staffordshire.Like you say many across the UK. Where is this one Sylvia?
