I'm proud of the fact that there are so many charities in Britain doing their best to prevent suffering in all its forms - here and abroad. Here are just a few of my favourite ones.

Sylvia although I admire charities, I find it very sad that so many associations should have to rely on the charity of others.. surely this great country of ours could afford to help.. I always thought that the lottery fund was set up for just that reason....how better could we use the proceeds than to help just a few of the charities you have listed. The problem with charities is that not a very large percentage of funds actually get to help...administration uses a lot...

Thank you all!

Yes, Joan, I agree - in an ideal world the lottery fund/government would be supporting all these good causes, but as that's never likely to happen, I'm just glad that other people care enough to help. Before donating to any charity, you can find out exactly where the money goes. Oxfam, for example, sends 82p in the £1 directly to its aid projects and disaster relief.
And I was SO grateful for the help of the RSPCA last week! I called them out to rescue a swan that had swallowed a fishing hook. They captured her and took her away to be operated on, and now she is fine and back on the canal with her family. Dad took good care of the cygnets for the few days she was away. I dread to think what I - or the poor swan - would have done without them.
