Balmy Glass Beach B, November 14, 2008 - Glass Beach- historically, there were three town dumps at this location. The area in this shot shows the second dump site. The first dump site closed in 1949 after being in use from the late 1800s to then. The second dump site closed in the mid fifties or so. The third and final dump site, just south of this location, was in use officially from 1949-1967. Through many attempts to keep the trash levels down by use of fire melted huge hunks of metal (entire cars) to the rocks, melted the glass, and in some cases, fused glass and rock, glass and metal, etc., to form what is called Bonfire Glass. In a later series I may upload some closeup shots of Bonfire Glass.
