On my camera, I can set exposure and focus by moving the view around until I get what I like, and gently pressing the button, then frame the shot I want and finish pressing to take the shot.
For example if I want to photograph a couple, and if I just frame them, the focus may be looking between them at a far off point, and the couple is out of focus. So, first, I focus on one of their faces, gently press, and then finish after framing the both of them.
Try it. I hope your camera can do that.

One other thing. If you like to take close ups, either use a camera with a built in macro lens or buy a macro lens for your camera. Some cameras can still auto focus with a macro lens and others can not.
I am using a finepix model that actually has 2 powers in its macro lens, and using the manual focus ring I can get VERY close and zoom in as well. The auto focus will not work at that range, but the results are very interesting. I will post a close up for you to see.
