Rufous Hummingbird at our backyard feeder. They are fiercely territorial and one will sit up in a tree an wait for another to come to the feeder, at which point the first will swoop down and chase him off!

I try to keep it clean so that no diseases get to the little birds. I'd fee bad if I found out I was killing the poor things by accident.

Thanks Hunju!

Paulina, to prepare the solution, I use 1 part sugar to 4 parts boiling water always.

About every 3 days I change the water and give it a good rinse with hot water before refilling.

i see...let me tell you that the hummingbirds that live in my garden does not like the boiled water...one time i tried and they did not drink it...i just mix sugar with water and it is ready to be drunk...
i do not use hot water to clean the feeder..it is a plastic container..so one time i did...the feeder became in a ballon....i just clean it with my old toothbrush, a few soap,,and a lot of water....a lot...and it is ready...

:) I suppose it comes down to the different minerals in water. At least you get a variety of hummingbirds all year round. Ours will soon be leaving to go back down south.
