I was taking several photo's as it hopped from plant to plant.
I set my F to 5.6 ( lowest for the lense : canon 400mm F5.6 USM L ) and snapped away.
With 5.6 you have to crank the ISO a little to compensate but there's no real image loss at ISO 800 and with 1/2500th sec shutterspeed to play with assuming your focus is on, you can nail plenty of shots as it's not only stationary but taking off / landing too !
If you're have a shorter lense and are having trouble " locking on " to the butterfly, another thing that helps is to focus on the plant itself too and snap away as the butterfly zooms around it - you only need it to fly into the level plane of focus once and you're good !
Wonderful shot!!!!!
I love taking pics, but have yet to get a DSL (only own point&shoot),...don't really understand your lingo, so I'll have to come to the UK for lessons when I finally upgrade the camera!!!! I do have an older 35mm Minolta that I might be able to do some of what you mentioned???,...but I hate to waste the film now. Digital,...you take it, if it's no good, delete, and it hasn't cost you anything (except a minute bit of battery time!)
Happy spring from Canada!
Cool! I have a 400mm lens (and 1.4 extender). I thin I should give this a try. I thought maybe you got one of those fancy motion triggers for your camera.
I didnt know such things existed ;)
Just a pair of hands ( and a bright sunny day ! )
I tried the 1.4x on it but this isnt a big garden and I found it gave me too many mm !!
But I'll use it when I go to the zoo next and try to get some 560mm kestrel shots !
