LARUS DOMINICANUS ( Lichtenstein ).

Kelp gull NOMBRE(S) LOCAL(ES): Gaviota, caucau (araucano) DISTRIBUCIÓN EN CHILE: desde Arica a Cabo de Hornos HABITAT: zona costera e interior de rios DESCRIPCIÓN: Largo: 60 - 62 cms. Cabeza, cuello, pecho, abdomen y cola blancos. Manto y lomo negro pizarra. Parte superior del ala negro pizarra con bordes blancos, parte inferior blanca con primarias negras. Pico amarillo con mancha roja en la mandíbula inferior. Patas amarillento verdoso. Párpados rojizos. En los inmaduros predominan los tonos café. Es la gaviota más grande de sudamérica, y con una notable zona de distribución. Vive y anida entre el Cabo de Hornos y la isla Lobos de Tierra (norte de Perú). Su alimento suelen ser peces, mariscos y crustáceos, aunque en las zonas cercanas al hombre se ha convertido en omnívora buscando entre los desperdicios de alimentos que son arrojados al mar o que llegan a la costa.También en la costa de Perú viven principalmente de los huevos y polluelos de las aves guaneras". Suelen anidar en diversos sitios, pero eligen preferentemente zonas planas en islas rocosas o acantilados costeros, normalmente con 2 o 3 huevos de un tamaño aproximado de 71 x 51 mm, de color crema verdoso con manchas negras o café oscuras. En las aves inmaduras predominan tonos de pardo y blanco, llegando a su color de adulto alrededor del cuarto año.

Yellow tip with red spot in the inferior jaw. Legs yellowish greenish. Reddish eyelids. In the immature ones the tones predominate coffee. It is the greatest gull of South America, and with a remarkable zone of distribution. It lives and it nests between the Cape Horn and the island Earth Wolves (North of Peru). Their food usually is fish, seafood and crustaceans, although the zones near the man it has become omnívora looking for between the food wastes that are thrown to the sea or which they arrive at the coast. Also in the coast of Peru the eggs and chicks of the guaneras birds live mainly on ". Usually they nest in diverse sites, but they choose flat zones in rocky islands preferredly or steep slabs, normally with 2 or 3 eggs of an approximated size of 71 xs 51 mm, of greenish color cream with dark black spots or coffee. In the immature birds tones of brown and target predominate, arriving at their color of adult around the fourth year.
