Joy34, there are ruins scattered all along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. They are not current dwellings or villages though.

Thankx for your reply. I had always thought that Machu Picchu was all by itself on a far flung mountain top. Quess it wasn't flung all that far the civilization at that time. thankz for sharing...............

Actually, it was connected to many settlements along a complex set of Inca roads. The nearest modern settlement is the town of Aguas Calientes (Hot Water), just in the valley below. So, not so remote afterall... :)
