Born 2-12-1809 HIS BIRTHDAY IS TODAY
He issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed all slaves in the southern states.
He presented the Proclamation at his 2nd Inaugural Address on March 4, 1865 on the Capitol Grounds
This is part of that proclamation.
"With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the night, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan - to do all which may achieve and cherish, a just and lasting peace, among ourselves , and with all nations".
This is part of a sculpture found at the railroad station in Springfield, Illinois.
