Adult Red-Tailed Hawk, "stilling."

Most of the Buteos (large-winged soaring hawks) can do this, but Red-Tails are best at it. They face into the wind and manage to hang almost motionless in the air, scanning the ground for yummy mammalian, reptilian, and other treats, occasionally adjusting itself with a tiny movement of a wing feather "finger." You can sometimes tell an adult from a juvenile (one year old or less) by how skilled it is at keeping perfectly motionless--the more experienced birds do it better. But it's easy to tell this one's an adult, because you can see it has a red tail.
